Some Characters May Not Return For New Smash Bros. Game


Fighting games may very well be some of the hardest games to make. One of most focused on aspects of the genre happen to be balance; making sure every character is on equally footing with one another. This seems to be an issue with the new Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS.

In an interview with NowGamer, Masahiro Sakurai, creator of the Smash Bros., says that some characters from the previous Smash Bros. games won’t be returning. He states:

We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros at this point.

When explaining his reasoning for not bringing back some of the cast, it seems to be a matter of timing. He goes on to say:

Adding new characters is not a simple addition – it’s really multiplication. The amount of work, adding a character is multiplied and becomes bigger and bigger as you go. We can’t because of the amount of work it takes. However, I do believe I understand that each character has its own set of fans out there who really like that character.

So we’re not going to cut characters out of the way, we’re going to put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it’s good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I’d like to apologise in advance to those fans.

Sad to hear. However, it is a matter of what you prefer. Would you want rather the game delayed, in order to fit more characters in? or Would it be better to have the game come out on time, but with a smaller roster? It does not mean much to me, seeing as Kirby is already confirmed for the game, but would some of you be upset if you favorite character were cut?

Smash Bros. Info Dump


While we will be getting our share Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS info throughout the year, E3 week gives us all the best new we want to know. In an interview with Kotaku, creator Masahiro Sakurai details the direction of the new Smash Bros. Games. He is looking to make the game a balance between Melee and Brawl. He states:

“I would consider the changes that we’re making this time around not as fixes, but that we’re changing the direction,” he said through a translator. “And so the vision for the overall balance of the game in Smash Bros Melee, it was sort of more focused towards more hardcore players. Then when it came around to making Brawl, this was a game that was targeting a Wii audience where there were a lot of beginner players, so it sort of leaned a little bit more in that direction.”

At IGN, they have the Scoop on what Sakurai was had to say about more third-party characters. Short story is not to expect a lot. According to Sakurai the focus is not to put a lot of third-party characters because of  the hoops they have to jump through to get them. He states:

“Adding third-party characters should be considered a very special case. In the last game, when we added Sonic and Snake, there were lots of different hoops to jump through as far as getting approvals and making sure all the parties involved were happy with the way things went. You can consider it a very special circumstance for that to happen,” Sakurai said. “Even in cases like adding Pokemon characters, there are a lot of parties involved and there’s a lot of wrangling. It’s much tougher than people can imagine. I know lots of people have requests and their own ideas about third-party characters that would work, but I want people to understand that adding a third-party character like Mega Man is a very special situation.”

Lots of Namco-Bandai characters are not a priority either. This is to be expected, seeing as the main direction when choosing characters for the Smash Bros. games has always been Nintendo owned characters first. While many classic third party characters are synonymous with Ninetendo, getting the legal rights can be a hassle they are not willing to deal with. Looks like Smash Bros. is trying not to fall into the same trap Playstation All Stars with players expecting there to be a lot guest characters in the game that the developers have no way of getting. I still say expect at least one or two more guest brawlers to make an appearance.

Lastly, Joystiq has the news that there will be no cross platform play between the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. It is disappointing to here, but not all that surprising. All that the article states is that there will be a small form of interaction between the two games, with customizations of some sort that can be transferred between the two.
