GameMaker Studio 2 Nintendo Switch Edition Launches in Summer, 2018

Fans of GameMaker Studio can rejoice! The famed 2D game development engine will support the Nintendo Switch this summer. This means developers can now export their games to work on the Switch. This comes with yesterday’s Nintendo Direct announcement that Undertale will arrive on the Nintendo Switch at some point.

Here’s what YoYo games, creators of GameMaker Studio 2, had to say about the move:

“We’re thrilled to be entering into a relationship with Nintendo, with the opportunities this will bring to our game development community, and most importantly, the players themselves,” said James Cox, General Manager, YoYo Games. “Nintendo has been hugely supportive of bringing independent releases to the Nintendo Switch console, and this partnership will mean even more wonderful games are released on the platform. We’re working hard to ensure the Nintendo Switch version of GameMaker Studio 2 retains the already excellent functionality of the engine, and we are committed to supporting developers and studios who are keen to make the jump to Nintendo’s record-breaking console.”

YoYo Games first launched the development software in 1999 under the name Animo.  It’s since evolved over the years into its latest incarnation, GameMaker Studio 2.  The software is one of the most accessible development platforms for young and new computer programmers, who want to get into development.

Opening up GameMaker to the Nintendo Switch is a big move for Nintendo, YoYo Games, and indie developers who use the platform. The Nintendo Switch is already becoming a popular platform for indie games. Notable games that have recently released include Dandara, Celeste, and more. GameMaker makes it one step easier for novice game designers to put their platform on the console.

YoYo Games hints that more games could be announced closer to the launch of the Nintendo Switch Edition this summer, which also happens to be around the time E3 rolls around. Hopefully, we will hear more sooner rather than later.
